Knitting: M1R, M1L holes?

WarmFunKindStrong · 17/06/2023 16:20

Why do I have holes/gaps in my knitting whenever I make one left or right (M1L, M1R)?

As far as I understand, the additional stitch is created by using the strand between the established stitches. This, however results in a hole in my knitting.

Is there anyone who can advise?

Is there a another way to M1L/M1R that doesn't produce holes?

Can anyone explain where I am going wrong or suggest an alternative to which doesn't result in holes please?

Do you knit into the back of the stitch as you make it? This seems to twist the loop and fill the hole.

Yarnysaura · 17/06/2023 16:28

Are you twisting it?

MyEyesAreBleeding · 17/06/2023 16:38

I'm a new knitter maybe 3 weeks and love nimble needles. His videos are amazing.

Or very pink knits

I've been making a hat and don't have holes. Happy to upload a picture if it's helpful. It's incredibly clunky at the start.

WarmFunKindStrong · 17/06/2023 17:08

@MyEyesAreBleeding thank you for your reply: Both of these knitters are on my radar. I have watched Nimble Needles in particular, lots of times but still I have holes when I attempt M1.ConfusedYes please to uploading a picture, I would really appreciate that. Flowers

n.b. I am a left handed knitter (however I find left handed YouTube videos confusing!Confused)

@DownTheRabbitHoIe @Yarnysaura twisting what? The strand I am using to M1?

Ohhh a lefty. Crap. Both those youtubers are amazing aren't they.

Have you found any left videos specifically? There's a way of reversing YouTube videos to make them lefty as well.

I know millions about crochet but new to knitting.

The increases/big stripes here are all done M1R and M1L. The first pic pa load recent going back in practice to my earlier attempts

MyEyesAreBleeding · 17/06/2023 17:13

So there's 4 stripes where theres increases and decreases on each side. Are you pulling your yarn right to check it's not a tension issue?

MyEyesAreBleeding · 17/06/2023 17:15

I've not watched this YouTuber but have heard their videos are good. Specifically for lefties

DownTheRabbitHoIe · 17/06/2023 17:21

I've just taken a few photos of a M1L to show you.

The first one shows the picked up stitch.

The second one shows me knitting into the back of it.

The third one shows the completed made stitch just above my thumb. I've knitted the next stitch along too so you can see there is no gap.

Yay 🎉

DownTheRabbitHoIe · 18/06/2023 17:52

@WarmFunKindStrong Excellent! I totally get the sense of accomplishment when mastering something new. Magic loop was my most recent "thing" and I'm gearing myself up for two at a time socks. Much YouTube watching to come...

MyEyesAreBleeding · 18/06/2023 20:23

I'm having good luck with travelling loop, minimising the gaps in the circle.

Are socks difficult? I have been thinking and trying to work out in my head how you do two at a time in the same cable. My brain just can't work it out.!

MyEyesAreBleeding · 18/06/2023 20:23

Well done op also, that's amazing 😁

DownTheRabbitHoIe · 18/06/2023 20:27

@MyEyesAreBleeding I do top down socks on a magic loop and find it much easier than 4 needles aka wrestling a hedgehog. I've not tried two at a time yet. Winwick Mum tutorials are easy to follow.

WarmFunKindStrong · 19/06/2023 13:46

@MyEyesAreBleeding For some reason I find circular needles difficult: possibly due to cheap needles...I find that I am constantly moving the stitches along and get unreasonably stressed by itConfused.

I much prefer dpns. Learnt on dpns top down socks watching Nimble Needles but using Winwick Mum's basic pattern.

If I want to do two socks at a time I simply cast onto two sets of same sized dpns (I have two sets of bamboo dpns in most sizes). Then switch between them, knitting a stage at a time.

Socks are quite technical but immensely satisfying once complete. I have made over 25 pairs (everyone got a pair as a gift)

However I have read that toe up socks are supposed to be easier (in getting the sizing right). So that's my goal for the autumn...🙈
