Crochet pattern advice please

Hello
I'm an experienced crocheter and can read most patterns, but am getting in a bit of a muddle!

I saw a beautiful - seemingly simple - crochet bandana/headscarf on a woman recently and she kindly let me take a photo of it. I searched online for a pattern and found similar things, but not the exact pattern. I have tried to recreate the bandana off the top of my head, but realise that my skills are very limited in this area!

The pic attached to this post is of the original bandana, with a lovely 8 pointed star in the middle of a small granny square. The next photo shows a couple of my attempts to reproduce it. The small square is the correct size, but doesn't have enough space between the 8 points. The larger (half finished) square is the right look, but is much too big.

I'm using 100% cotton DK with a 3mm hook.

I think the original bandana came from Urban Outfitters, so they won't be able to tell me the pattern.
I'd be grateful for any advice. Thank you so much.

I think:

(uk terms)

16 dc into a magic ring

then 8 2dtr tog with 3-4 chain between each petal (because I think the stitches look longer than trebles but I might be wrong).

then the orange round which looks like straightforward trebles, joining as you go.

what weight yarn are you using? I think your yarn might be too heavy for your hook as you need a more open texture.

the image shows the reverse side of the stitches which will affect how it looks as you work it.

Oh my goodness, that's so kind of you. Will give it a go. That's so impressive to be able to see something and produce a pattern.

It's Rowan handknit cotton, but can't see what weight it is on the label. It says size 4 or 4.5 hook, but I used a 3 to try to make it a bit smaller.

I'm interested you think the original bandana shows the reverse side - I hadn't spotted that.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

I made a quick partial square - I think there's an extra row between the dc together and the first round of sc.

I did magic ring, 8 sc, no join and then 8sc around again on top of the original stitches. Fasten off

2sc into each stitch, no join then 2 sc around again going back into the same yellow sc to create puffy stitches

Join with ss , sc, ch into same stitch (counts a dc) dc into next stitch, (3 ch, dc togheter over next 2 stitches ) repeat around then 3 ch before joining.

actually if that's the reverse then there's not a second row 🤦🏼‍♀️ I think the white stitches are tr tog (or uk dtr tog ) then chains between so ignore above and go with Theodora's pattern 😂

Oops sorry Yarnysaura's pattern

Theodora · 10/06/2023 14:17

Thanks so much.

I can't get the magic circle to close with 16dc. Hadn't thought of two rounds of yellow - that defo looks like the original. I like the puffy stitches!

I think the original pic looks like there is a round of white dc maybe before the pointy white.

Thanks to both of you.

Here's a close up of the original.
Thanks again both of you for your crochet skills.

Your yarn is too thick, you need a 4ply with a 3mm hook for this.

Yarnysaura · 10/06/2023 14:27

On closer look those look like 3 dtr clusters, not 2, which means you need 18 dc into the magic ring.

Theodora · 10/06/2023 14:33

Thanks so much. I agree yarn is too thick. Will hunt down a 4 ply in these colours. How can you get 18 dc in a magic ring? Or will it work with thinner yarn?

Should be fine with a thinner yarn.

Wool or wool/nylon mix (eg sock yarn) will work better than cotton as it will squish.

Theodora · 17/06/2023 16:03

Thank you both. Have now had time to get to the yarn shop for some 4 ply. Works so much better!

Thank you for the advice Smile
