I have 4 1/2 mm needles at a length of 30 cm, 3 100g balls of baby aran wool and have been practicing, i can do garter stitch reasonably well, full rows of purl are ok but the book says i should do moss stitch but i cant do knit one purl one without making a mess i think that i get muddled bringing the yarn from back to front.

Someone help! Baby due 26th March i really want a small moses basket blanket.

make it easy on yourself - do a garter stitch border (knit each row) and make the main body of the blanket stocking stitch (knit one row, purl one row)

My local "The works" bookshop had Debbie Bliss Simply Baby book - it's great for begineers and at 3.99 cheaper than a ball of wool.

Garter stitch all over is fine for a blanket. Nice and soft and warm - don't worry.

Also you could do garter stitch squares (20sts/40 rows say) and then sew together with the ridges facing alternate ways to look really clever.
