Advice on wool for special blanket

I'm about to start to crochet a blanket for my sister in laws birthday at the end of the year: it's my DH suggestion of a gift and he picked the pattern.

It's quite a simple pattern so I want to make it special using a nice yarn. The pattern is in aran weight, but I might go down to DK if I like the look of the stitch better, I'm going to try it out on some scraps I have.

Any advice/ suggestions on a nice wool/ wool blend? Something soft and warm would be lovely!

Only limit is I have to be able to get it in shades of purple!

I agree - Merino.

if you look at the yarns Wooly Hugs use for the special Mumsnet blankets you'll see which brands work well together" This will mean you can probably get a range of purples. They are all DK though (I don't know if there are Aran varieties)

These are the brands they use...

Debbie Bliss Rialto DK ( can only be bought from Love Crafts)
Drops Merino Extra Fine DK
Jenny Watson Pure Merino DK
Katia Merino 100% DK
King Cole Luxury Merino DK
Sublime Extra Fine Merino Wool DK
Patons Merino Extrafine DK

Brilliant thank you so much! I'll do up some tests but I think I'd prefer the DK, it's not going to be huge as it's for the sofa. Thanks again!I'll
I used a lovely silk blend when I made a shawl for his other sister so I wanted this to be special as well.
