HELP Can anyone tell me how to use a darning plate?

Hi, I have a Brother sewing machine and a split my favourite jeans. The machine has a darning plate, but I have tried and it was a disaster. The split in the denim just keeps pulling apart when I try to move the fabric backwards and forwards, I ended up with a huge tangled mess of cotton that I had to hack out with scissors. I thought I'd killed the machine for good.

Can anyone tell me in words of one syllable how to do this? Or should I just give up and do it by hand? Unfortunately, the split is on the left bum cheek of the jeans and therefore will be under strain each time I sit down!!! So the fix needs to be ... er... strong...

Hi, I have a darning facility on my machine, if not a special plate. The way you do the darning is that you find a piece of material roughly the same as your original garment and put this underneath the tear. Then you go backwards and forward over the tear on the outside, so that the tear is completely covered by stitching. The piece of material at the back prevents further tearing hth
