Tips for dressmaking

I've been going to classes on and soft for a while. Back to it after a 7 year gap.

I watch lots of insta videos about sewing and I noticed (it wasn't the point of the video) that the sewer cut notches out the way instead of making a notch in the way.

So a mirror image rather than a wee nip into the fabric.

It's so much easier!

Are there any other tips like this? Or worthwhile (super affordable) handy gadgets?

I have a brother sewing machine new in 2004 so getting on a bit now.

Tips for sewing appreciated. Thanks.

Change your sewing machine needles regularly - not just when you break them.

Match sewing machine needle sizes and types to your fabric.

Invest in a new box of pins if yours are old. Rusty or blunt pins need chucked immediately. I got a sharps box from the local pharmacy.

I prefer snipping my notches IN, and use other marks if the fabric is shredded, like tailors tacks instead. Whatever works for you though!

Prewash or steam shrink your fabric before you cut.

Guard your fabric scissors from borrowers who'll use them for paper and card and make you want to cry....
