Knitting blanket squares

Hi, I want to knit a blanket from squares knitted in different stitches, some cables, some patterns, etc.
Can I follow a pattern designed for (eg) Dk wool but use super chunky instead? The squares will be much bigger, and I’ll use different sized needles. Is there any reason why it’ll not work? Thanks!

Knit a swatch to see what the measurements will be - you can definitely use different thickness of yarn (I can't spell gauge) but it sometimes has unexpected results.

That makes sense! I’ll probably try and make it from all the same type of wool but in different colours. I used to knit as a young teen but that’s 39-odd years ago now....Thanks for your help!

Sounds fun! I’m doing a sampler blanket at the minute too. I think your plan should be fine as long as all the squares are the same weight as each other. The bigger the better with blankets anyway, in my view!
