Upholstery - anyone know what this fabric is?

Not sure if I'll get an answer as a bit of a niche question!

I'm about to embark on re-upholstering our three seater sofa. I have some experience so should be okay (I hope!)

I'm going to be using fairly expensive fabric so I'd like to do something similar to the current sofa where they've clearly used a cheaper fabric behind the cushions.

Does anyone have any clue what kind of fabric I need to look for?

Attached a pic of the cheapo fabric...

Is it cotton calico or duck? 🤔

SoupDragon · 24/12/2022 11:44

I think it's one of those two... a sort of smooth fabric that isn't too flimsy.

If it’s shiny it’s likely to be a synthetic fabric. They are very strong and easy to wipe clean.

Nylon?

Then it is a nylon, but a calico will do a similar job and would be more hard wearing... look at any of the removable covers and you will see the same, although quite a few use the almost paper like cloth you find on cheaper pillows and cushions.

Nylon is harder wearing and stronger than calico. It’s basically plastic.

Nylon or synthetics can be very slippery under cushions like this.
