Sewing kit

My daughter has recently got into sewing. She's very patient so I think potentially it could be a good hobby for her. I have only ever dabbled. She has asked for a sewing kit for Christmas and I have only ever bought cheap kits from b&m etc which is what she is currently using.

Is there a brand or anything that you would recommend? Is there anything I should be looking for in the threads included or is one reel of cotton much like any other? She has already made a bag, she would like to make scrunchies and a silk pillowcase.
Any advice appreciated.

Prepacked sets don't tend to be great and good threads are better as they don't break as easily or fray

I would go to a haberdashery store or somewhere like hobby craft/John Lewis and get:

  • Gutermann threads - black, white and whatever her favourite colour is
  • a small pair of scissors and a big pair of dressmaking shears
  • dressmaking pins
  • set of needles in various sizes
  • tape measure
  • washable or self fading pen for marking fabric patterns
  • a plastic craft storage box with sections to store stuff in

Optional extras

  • pattern weights - you can get really pretty ones on Amazon
  • cutting mat
  • rotary cutter
