Hello! And help! My mum crocheted a lovely scarf for my daughter and within a week I have lost it. Tried and failed to find it. I think I am going to try to make it myself..but im a total beginner. Does anyone know the size hook I should use, and idea what stitch was used here?

Thank you

That looks like linen with a DC instead of an SC. It’s not hard but may take you a long while as a beginner.

Plus to tell you hook size I’d have to know what yarn you had. And are you going to get an exact match on this yarn?

NannyR · 27/10/2022 14:38

It looks like treble stitches to me, but worked into the space between stitches, rather than the top of the stitch. Can't really tell what hook or yarn - it looks chunkier than double knitting, maybe aran or chunky and a size 6 or 7mm hook?

The stitch is U.K. trebles done between stitches.

You can see it used here for a blanket:

The blanket pattern is here:

You would just chain fewer stitches to get the width you want for a scarf.

Bella Coco on YouTube is a good place to start learning.

I would use a 4mm hook with double knitting weight yarn.

Treble in UK terms, which would be a double in US terms.

Windbeneathmybingowings · 27/10/2022 16:16

Yes I do use US terms, sorry.

it looks to me it’s not in the spaces, it’s a chain in between so that’s linen or some call it moss. I think some rows might look like they are SC (or whatever that is in Uk terms)

I'd just tell your mum! Am sure she will crochet you another one in quick time! If she's anything like my mum she will relish the opportunity to do some more crochet!

It looks exactly like the examples I've shared, which I've made myself! If you work between the stitches and turn your work every row it does look like alternating longer and shorter stitches.

Thank you so much! I found the exact wool which is here: www.hobbycraft.co.uk/sirdar-phoebe-baby-crofter-dk-yarn-50g/6118081013.html
In case that changes anything

You would normally use a 4mm or 4.5mm hook with that yarn, but for a scarf you might want a looser tension so could use a bigger hook. I'm making something similar with DK yarn at the moment and I'm using a 6mm hook.
