Football scarf blanket

Hi, I'm looking for some advice on the best way to proceed. My DH and DS have season tickets for a club that gives them a scarf every year when they renew their tickets. We've hundreds of scarves hanging around which I'd like to make into a blanket. They're chunky knitted scarves and I'm wondering the best way to piece them together. I'm a reasonable machine quilter and don't really like to hand sew. Can anyone think how I can machine sew them together?

I'm not a quilter myself, indeed I don't do any sewing, so feel free to dismiss this entirely, but would it work to use a sheet (or similar material) to sew them on to ?

Hmmm, that's a good idea, I'm off to ponder if I could make that work.
