Kiln at home/insurance

Does anyone have a pottery kiln (or maybe glass kiln) at home or in their garage rather than a studio? I am desperately trying to work, I just want a home insurance that will cover me to work at home, online quotes will cover me working at home but ringing them is driving me crazy explaining and asking if it will include covering a kiln (obviously a risky item to have given the temperature).

The latest one I spoke to just said yes without knowing full details that others have needed, should I just go with them? He didn't fill me with confidence. Anyone? 😢

I do not use a kiln [work with fine arts and textiles] but it might be worth looking at craftcover in Wigan. They offer specialised cover for kiln use. You could also make contact with your local Artists Society and ask if they know anyone who uses a home kiln and if so could they signpost you further.

Thank you so much! I'll check them out. I have messaged a few potters but none have replied.

You'll need specialist insurance for your home and business use. Try a broker such as www.ajg.com/uk, Hiscox or Coversure.

Some insurers I always see recommended in the glass world are:

Hencilla canworth
QuoteFour
Ageus (homeworker policy)

You'll probably have to ring them (sorry don't have the contact details) - they're apparently well used to glass kilns, so shouldn't be any problem with pottery ones.

Good luck

Hi MallowCat, I know it's a while since you posted this but I'm currently in the same predicament and struggling to get insurance for my kiln. Just wondering if you had any luck with getting insurance? Would love to know. Thanks

No I lost the will and gave up. But I will try again soon.
