Anyone got a good salt dough recipe for a 20 month old to play with???

I have looked on the internet and there seems to be many variations on the ratio of salt to flour and some have vegetable oil in.

It is for my son to play with as he still puts everything in his mouth including his brother's ELC's soft stuff so thought I could make some and the salt would put him off eating it for a snack

I don't want to add colouring to it, just want him to have fun with the texture. He likes squidging food through his fingers

Many thanks.

i made this one and it worked ok and was really easy to make:

Put 1 cup of water, 1 cup of plain flour, 2 tbsp of cream of tartar, 1/2 cup of salt, 1 tbsp of cooking oil (and food colouring or powder paint) in a pan. stir over a medium heat until this makes a dough. Cool. Store in plastic box in the fridge.

I don't think i will ever buy playdo again.
Tho have just realised i never stored this in the fridge - maybe it is walking around the toy cupboard as I type...

"the salt would put him off eating it for a snack"

The odd thing is that, although they all grimace when they taste it, they try it again...

If you add a tablespoon or 2 cocoa you get a wonderful chocolate smelling dough that looks like poo

We make our own for nursery, exactly the same recipe as taffy. The cream of tartar gives it a lovely smooth texture and the salt is supposed to put them off eating it!

I have this recipe but have never used it. Am going to make the chocolate one next week. Sounds lovely. And I just know DS will be delighted, "Look Mummy. Big Poo. Yayyyy."

Playdough

Flour 300g / 10oz
salt 300g / 10 oz
water 200ml / 1/3 pint
oil 2 teaspoons

mix together

bake 20 mins at 180

no Overrated please do the cream of tartar one, much better

I have never bought cream of tartar - I don't even know if we have it over here. Have added it to my shopping list

FrannyandZooey · 24/01/2008 22:04

DO NOT buy tartare sauce instead by accident

policywonk a MNer who will remain nameless was convinced by a Twatrose employee to do this, and her playdough was sticky and funny smelling.

Thanks everyone, I had better not make the chocolate one or not only will he eat it but I probably would too. Diets do that too you, you do start imagining everything as food.

Will add cream of tartar to my shopping list and do some next week. Am quite excited about it now. Cursing having to wait.

Do keep an eye on him. DD2 eats the - incredibly salty - home made dough at toddler group by the handful. Maybe I should just let her eat more crisps
