The thing about that cable fabric is that it can go either way. I think, online, the correct way is arrows up, but I always make it arrows down. Wear it and enjoy!

GnomeDePlume · 25/11/2022 06:04

You made it @NutellaEllaElla so the right way is the way you made it.

Anyway, go fabric shopping.

Is that the sewist's equivalent of 'hang spring cleaning'?

Ulysses · 25/11/2022 06:18

That fabric is great Nutella and honestly don’t think there’s a right way either. I’m a knitter and a stitch is usually v shaped so arrow down but even I can’t tell without having to think about it quite hard. It looks lovely both ways. and on the website in the photo of someone using the fabric it’s the opposite direction too.

I managed to do the fly zip but my twin needle top stitching is awful. So I am putting that part away for now and will concentrate on getting the back legs done and I’ll retry later on.

Yes to the pp talking about how corduroy is difficult to work with. Good tip about using the walking foot though. I’ve dug mine out.

I thought correct way was arrows down! But I've done it arrows up. Hmm now I'm not sure, I'll have another look and see how I feel. It is a totally gorgeous fabric.

I've been wondering about a sweatshirt in that fabric - is it easy to sew with?

CrimsonAlligator · 25/11/2022 13:45

I’ve knitted a lot of cable patterns and I agree that this pattern would looks good whether it’s upside down or not. It’s a lovely looking fabric. I’d be tempted if I hadn’t already placed a big order this week!

My plans for a long sewing weekend have been scuppered as DH wants to go the other side of the country to pick up a massive pile of rust a motor bike frame. He never complains when I drag him around wool/fabric/craft shops, so now it’s my turn to smile and look interested 😂

Craftybodger · 25/11/2022 18:07

Can anyone break my record?

Yesterday my sewing machine only sewed backwards! It’s been quirky for a while so I took in for a long overdue service.

Today, 3 machines went wonky on me!! 1st one(loaner from sewing shop) was supplied with the wrong power cable, 2nd on (very old F&R) I just couldn’t get on with, 3rd one worked for 3 angels costumes and then kept malfunctioning!

Tomorrow I’m buying a backup machine, I’ve wasted precious time trying to work around my machine, I need a good backup.

NutellaEllaElla · 25/11/2022 20:03

"my sewing machine only sewed backwards!" @Craftybodger Whaat?? 😆
You've got as bad juju as I do with electronics. I'm sure there's a bad energy people like us emit that wrecks everything. 😂

So i've dropped my unrelenting high standards and decided to choose love instead😄My dress is all but made, just a tiny bit of hemming to do. I do love it. It's so cosy. @dubyalass I've done most of it with the overlocker, just topstitched the neckband and am part way through hemming it and it's been great! It's thick but no problems at all. Would sew again 😁

I've invested in a lovely dashwood corduroy.

it's totally going to become another brumby skirt though.

im trying to tell myself it's ok to make the same things over and over again and not to feel guilty about it Grin

Honestly, I keep promising myself i'll make a top or a jacket but so far, more dresses! You gotta do what you love ❤️

I like making tops. Thinking of which DD has brought me a lovely piece of fabric back from Senegal. Not quite enough to make a top on its own but I have an idea.

Curtains are finished and up! They need to hang for a while to see if the wrinkles drop out. They don't look much but compared to John Lewis made to measure (we would have had to go with m2m because of the size of the window) I reckon I have saved about £400 for the self same thing.

Anything I make with the spare fabric (around 7m) is free!

They look fabulous @GnomeDePlume!

KirstenBlest · 26/11/2022 20:12

Well done @GnomeDePlume . They look great.

If it is wax fabric, it will be lovely to sew with. There are lots of ways you can use it.

Tinuviel · 26/11/2022 20:31

Lovely table runner, @BookShark and fantastic curtains, @GnomeDePlume. I've got another kimono style jacket on the go and need to see if I can do a rolled hem round the edge. I haven't done much else but just ordered 3m of silk from poundametre. I think I might use it for the Regency dress I've been planning since the spring! Next year I will get to the Jane Austen festival!

NutellaEllaElla · 26/11/2022 23:15

Very well done @GnomeDePlume ! I bet that feels very satisfying to have saved so much money!

Well done @GnomeDePlume ! They look fab.

I am halfway through the Lander trousers Pants - cut an 18 (am usually a 16) and basted the seams and they're waaaaay too small. Thankfully they tell you to baste at 1" seam allowance so I had room for manoeuvre. However, having done them out of teal canvas I am now facing up to having essentially made some scrubs. Hospital chic?

GnomeDePlume · 28/11/2022 07:43

@dubyalass I think the button fly takes them above scrubs

Thank you for kind comments about curtains. I am pleased with them. DH is going to use some of the spare fabric to recover dining chair seats. For the first time ever we will look put together rather than thrown together!

dubyalass · 28/11/2022 19:55

@GnomeDePlume I hope so! If not, I live near the hospital so I’ll fit right in…

Oh I am so guilty of this, so often I make something and then think that it makes me look like X.

so many lovely fabrics also remind me of travel agents/ bank cashiers blouses of the 90s, I've basically ruled out a whole genre of fabric because it fails the 'would this look out of place on a Thomas cook travel agent' test.

I do sympathise. I bought some nice cheerful light blue fabric to make a summer top - nope, scrubs.

Bought some mid blue fabric - scrubs again

It did start to occur to me that I was working through our local hospital's spotters' guide to uniform colours.

😂

I whipped up a TATB Frankie very quickly today out of some lovely thick Jersey. I was really pleased with the finish so used one of my KATM labels (I save them for when I'm particularly pleased with something).

Now all I can see is the tiny bit of mismatched pattern that no one else will ever see and its annoying me immensely
