Sketching for beginners

Started a bit of sketching, popping into Hobbycraft tomorrow. I don't want to spend a lot of money at this "starter" stage. What do you recommend?

Avoid Hobbycraft for a start, it's expensive. But, seeing as you're going anyway, just a good set of pencils from 4H to 4B (Derwent are fine) and a sketchbook. Putty erasers are good but a bog standard one will be OK to start with.
Start your kit small and add to it when you work out what you need.
