Machine washable sock yarn

Hi all.

I'm thinking about picking up the needles again after a very long hiatus. I'd like to knit some socks as a gift for someone.

Can anyone recommend a sock yarn that is totally machine washable (on a 'normal' wash rather than a gentle cycle) and that has a few shades of solid colours to choose from? I know there are lots of wonderful yarns around but I'd like something that is easy to wash so that they actually get worn without fear.

I've been caught in the past my yarns that claim to be machine washable and have shrunk. I'll never forget the beautiful Lacey gloves I made in sock weight yarn that completely felted when I washed them 😭

I know your pain - I made a lovely pair of socks once that I accidentally washed and they felted to horrible grey lumps!!

My lovely mum has knitted me loads and loads of socks and always uses Regia. Really hard wearing and machine washable. She mainly uses the self striping yarn but they sell it in plain colours too.

More importantly can anyone recommend an easy pattern for a first time sock knitter. I don’t mean to wrongly post a link, but to recommend the title of one that I can go and buy 🙏 🙏

Opal, Regia and WYS yarns wash and wear well.

Eighties the Winwick Mum blog has an excellent tutorial.

If you want a book then buy the Winwick Mum book.

Ravelry is always my first port of call - do you have an account? Search for beginner socks or vanilla socks, I bet quite a few patterns will pop up!
