Galt easy painters - help! how do they work?

I bought some of these 'paint bottles with sponge applicators' for my toddlers and we cannot work out how to make the paint come out. Any advice from experienced users?

Whack them hard on the paper repeatedly for a few minutes to get the paint flowing. Some take ages to get going.
