Baby blanket colours help please!

A very lovely friend of mine is pregnant and I want to knit her a baby blanket. In a happy coincidence, I massively over estimated how much bamboo/cotton I would need for a project last year Blush so I was going to use this stash. I'm planning something very simple, just stripes with a border in one colour the whole way round. Since I don't know if the baby will be a girl or boy, I was thinking of using the yellow for the border and random stripes of the others. What do you think? Alternative is to use the green for the border, but I really don't like that colour (previous project recipient requested it which is why I have it at all) so it might be throwing me off. Any recommendations welcome! Also, what width would you suggest? I thought 250 stitches. I'm knitting on 3.5mm (and I knit very slowly!).

That's a lovely mix of colours that remind me of the garter stitch blanket in the photo. It's one that Mamas and Papas used to sell called Gingerbread.

The only thing I would say about the border is you might not have enough if that is your only ball of yellow. It would be a shame to get so close to the end and then run out.

That's the style I was thinking of! You're right about the yellow although I can get more. Would you prefer with the green or yellow for the border?

I really like the green! I feel like the yellow and orange colours don't quite go with the others.

I really like the green, and as it's a bit darker than the yellow I think it would work better as a border. That said, all the colours are lovely and none of them wouldn't work.

I think I prefer the yellow to the green but I might be tempted to put the odd row of border colour in the main blanket just to tie it together so definitely get a bit more yellow.

I do like the white border too just to add a third colour into the discussion

If you Google or look on Pinterest there are charts that show dimensions for various sized baby blankets which will help you work out your stitch and row count.

Is the yarn 4ply or DK? Working on 3.5mm needles would give quite a dense fabric - they are around the recommended size for 4ply and smaller than the recommended size for DK. I'd be inclined to size up a bit just to get a bit of drape. Perhaps 4mm for 4ply and 4.5 or even 5mm for DK.

I would do green, pink, purple and both blues, i.e. all of them except the yellow and red (or is it orange?). Undecided what size is best.

No! Please don't confuse me with more colours Grin white would be lovely though. I have three more balls of yellow in my online basket. I'll check if they have it in white.

The yarn is dk. I've knit it on both 4mm and 3.5mm before and like both. 4mm might help my sanity. I'll have a google around to see about sizing.

The orangey one is actually more rose coloured irl, but yes, I think I would use it sparingly.

I love the green (I got my mum to do amoss stitch baby blanket for me in a similar green - I hear from my sister she hated the colour choice…). I would go green, blue plus orangey pink with only a narrow green border but that is just because I am not fond of pastels.

The colours reminded me of the mamas and papas blanket too. I would drop the orange and use the other colours as strips of varying width with a white border!

SoupDragon · 13/01/2022 12:12

I like the orangey one if, as you say, you'll use it sparingly. Having one slightly "off" colour can often lift the look of a blanket I think.

My go-to size for a baby blanket is around 70cm plus border. Useful for pram, car seat and lying on and easily transportable. Length is whatever length looks right at the width I've made!
