i was going to use some cashmerino aran in my stash, but it's too fine single and too heavy doubled. any ideas? any americans up and about who know this kind of yarn and can tell me what it's like?

Have you tried www.yarndex.com? Just looked it up, and the Berroco alpaca is a worsted weight- the equivalent of a DK weight here. So two strands of a DK held together should do it. Cool pattern, I might try it too!

hang on though - worsted is more like aran, isn't it? Especially as it's on 5mm needles - that's a reasonably heavy aran, no?
I knit a lot with Noro Kureyon on 5mm needles, and the colours in that are fantastic - but if you want single colour, soft (next-to-the-skin) stuff, Paton's Jet is actually really nice: it's wool and alpaca and comes in a range of variegated colours and plain colours.

Well, to be honest there isn't an exact equivalent for worsted here in the UK. I have a bunch of worsted weight yarn I've brought back from the US and it's closer to DK than to aran. In the yarn shop by my parents house in NY, I went searching for an DK weight yarn and they told me to use worsted. I think it depends on the fibre and the brand.

The recommended gauge for this yarn is 20 sts/10cm, the 5mm needles only come in when you use it double, so you need something sort of in between aran and DK. Cascade 220 is 19 sts normally, and comes in lovely colours. Alternatively, as Pruni suggests, you could just use a Noro heavy aran but not doubled.

Err, well.... I am currently making a baby cardigan for my friend whose wife had a baby before Christmas, and am about to sew up dd's jumper that she designed and I knitted, and I am still in the middle of A Cardigan for Arwen, and I will be sewing in the ends of my Lizard Ridge any time now. Oh, and I am about two thirds of the way through dd's Log Cabin blanket. I need to take control of my life. And you?

Jumper for ds with fuzzy alien on it (Grr intarsia)
made stonking lizard ridge hat for MIL for Christmas from noro Iro - really fab
am designing two sweaters atm, one in felted tweed and one just a mixture of odds and sods

still need to do that other hummingbird sock

it is getting beyond a joke!

my hubby dragged me out might go again next week to see whats left
