What size frame for this tapestry kit?

I have ordered an Ehrman kit which I am going to attempt to do, slowly, as a present for my mother. (I really enjoyed helping DS with an embroidery project for art recently, this is a bit of an optimistic leap from that Grin)

I would like a frame sort of like the one below to make it easier to work on but am unsure what size I ought to buy for a 36cm square project — they’re adjustable, but only to a degree — would 40 x 56 be okay or is that far too big? Not totally clear on the mechanics of it.

Luca-S LMC4056 Tapestry Frame with Beech Clips 40 x 56 Centimeters www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00NCAB0ZY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_QYQN8XT1RRSKS2RJXSCH?psc=1&_encoding=UTF8&tag=mumsnetforu03-21

The frame needs to be wider than the canvas (and remember 36x36cm is the finished size of the stitched area - the canvas itself is several centimetres larger than that). So 56cm wide would be OK.

I think 40cm is too high. The point of a rotating frame is that the height of the frame is far less than the height of the canvas (if it's a large canvas). The top and bottom edges of the canvas are attached to the rotating bars at the top/bottom of the frame and you roll some of the canvas around them so that only part of the canvas is visible at any one time, making the whole thing less unwieldy than having the whole 50x50cm canvas in front of you.

The ones I use are the old style with cotton webbing you stitch the canvas to - I haven't used any with clips but the principle is the same.

There's some info about choosing a frame size here:

I would use a frame about 50cm wide. On the JollyRed site either the 21inch (a) or (b), or this one:

No advice sorry OP, but I truly love the design. Please do update when you get it done.

I didn’t realise until today that anyone had replied to this! But by coincidence, @Plumpciousness, I did actually end up ordering one of the ones you recommended — the JR 21 (b) Smile

Thank you — will update in the distant future when I’ve made some progress.
