Paint for coir?

Sorry for slightly random question but pretty sure arty wisdom can be found here!

We are redecorating our newly bought house. There is a large 1 metre by 1/2 metre rectangle of natural coloured coir right in the front hallway - as an embedded mat - so not a freestanding mat to move at will but something built in as flooring. Now - we are OK with an inbuilt mat and appreciate it with small kids and dog.

But - the colour of it - yellow really - as natural as can be I suppose just doesn’t fit the direction of the decor and I hate it. Can coir be coloured without looking awful? It would need to be a block of decent colour - no stencilled messages and symbols. We are after dark gray or black. Walls are all white and it would lead to dark gray carpeting going up the stairs.

Is such a things as spray colouring it or something at all feasible? Or should we let coir mat be as is?

This is an old thread so you might have sorted it by now but even if it's inset it can just be replaced, any carpet / flooring fitter will be able to do it. I wouldn't even think about painting it!
