Attaching a waistcoat and skirt?

I have a waistcoat that fastens at the front and I want to add a skirt

I can sew the skirt round the bottom I'd the waistcoat but in order to get it on the skirt needs a split at the front

How can I hide or fasten the split neatly?

Would a fly like you'd get on trousers work? Maybe with buttons that mimic the ones on the waistcoat so it looks like a continuation.

As above - could you unpick the seam on the waist code, put a zip in and then reattach it? That way the actual fabric of the waist code would hide the attachment.

My lack of sewing knowledge may be shining through.

Maybe a fly zip

I was going a bit 'evening' with a taffeta skirt

The waistcoat has hidden hooks and eyes

@Yourstupidityexhaustsme do you mean put a side zip in the waistcoat and skirt? That could work too

I think I'm trying to be lazy

Why do you want to do this? Is it to avoid seeing a gap? It'd be easier to attach a higher waistband to your skirt, even popping on bra straps so that it's attached over your shoulders ( like braces! ).

So like a shirt dress, you open the waistcoat to put it on.....but the gap needs to go lower to allow for putting it on

I could just do a skirt and a waistcoat which would be the easiest option, I just fancied a dress

If the skirt had an elasticated waistband at the front, would that work when the waistcoat was open? I can't quite decide it it would or not.

SoupDragon · 21/08/2021 14:44

Probably not as the gathering would be all wrong.

KatyMac · 21/08/2021 14:49

That's possible @SoupDragon - I had been thinking 1 inch pleats but I could gather

I may just do the separate skirt and add a bustle for interest?

I've altered 2 waistcoats and made 2 skirts while dithering and not doing anything with this idea
