How do I make a christmas stocking

I want to make DD a christmas stocking with her name on it but not sure of the best way to go about it or what materials would be best.

Am thinking maybe felt would be a good idea and perhaps embroidery thread. Though I guess it would be easier to use some kind of fabric paint.

What sort of stitch would I use to sew her name on?

Would be great to hear from anyone who has made/is making one.

Hi - I'm about to make my second for my DS. I made a lovely one (xmas sack, not stocking) based on the one my mum made for me and my sister.

Got red felt, cut the pieces into desired shape and stitched together.

Then I cut out green felt squares (about 3") and used a red thread to overstitch around the edges.

Then I stitched her name diagonally down the front, one ,letter in each green square, using a yellow embroidery thread in a chain type stitch.

Either side of the letters in the top and bottom corners, I stitched green felt xmas trees and overstitched with a brighter green thread.

Then I stitched on tiny red balls in a couple of rows on the trees and stitched gold sequins over the tree like lights. Then I cut tiny strips of ribbon and placed them on top of each other to make a star for each xmas tree top.

At the bottom letter of the name I stitched on a brown branch with holly leaves and berries. I'm not great at sewing but really enjoyed it - maybe I should have left myself more time though for this next one!

you can get special fabric pens to draw your design on before you stitch over. then the ink washes off.

Luciemule that sounds lovely.

I am really looking forward to making it - going to go and get the material tomorrow.

I think it will be really lovely to get it out year after year and remember making it for her first christmas.

It will no doubt not be perfect as not done anything like this for long time but will be fun to make.
