What is the softest yarn?

Looking to crochet some lovely soft scarves this autumn. Was thinking cashmere but it's £££. Any recommendations on something a bit cheaper but still nice and soft? Thanks

Alpaca is lovely.
Merino wool is good and soft
You can get blends with wool and alpaca in.
But they need hand washing so if you are gifting them check the recipient understands or they will shrink and felt on first wash.
