Hello haven't been on this board before, mainly a nappy, breast feeding, products and for sale section kind of girl!
Anyway was wondering if anyone could help me with a sewing pattern please?
It has the amount of fabric I need on it, but I don't understand it. It says I need 1 3/4 yards of one type, 3 yards of another and 1 1/2 yards of another. Also need cotton canvas but this is given with 2 dimensions, ie width as well so I understand it. How do you know how wide the fabris you need is for the other bits? Is it a square yard? Help?!?!!?

it'll say 1 3/4 yards of 52", 3 yards of 48" etc

find the fabric you want to use
find out how wide it is
buy accordingly

Washersaurus · 22/11/2007 22:33

What are you making?

pamplemousse · 22/11/2007 22:40

MrsB it doesn't say !!! Seriously it just says '1 3/4 yards of light to mid weight cotton for the exterior'
Only on the cotton canvas requirements does it say '7/8 yard of 60" wide 10oz canvas' i understand that bit!
Its going to be a nappy bag eeek! I am such a novice at this stuff check back in a year and i'll have a pic up!!

Do you have a pattern number or a link you could post so we could have a look at it with you?

LadyOfTheFlowers · 22/11/2007 22:55

You just need canvas that long, 1 3/4 yard.
The width will not be relavant I wouldn't have thought? It all comes in a pretty standard width.
It is the 'grain' you need to be more concerned with.
They usually allow enough extra so you can position it correctly.

now don't think I'm lazy for asking this, as I do my own sewing and knitting but..
why are you making a nappy bag?

If you join the Boots parenting club (for free) you get a free Huggies changing bag.

would save a lot of hassle!

But, ok you need to type out here exactly what it says. I am inclined to agree with Mrs Badger. If its having an inner and outer, there should only be two types of fabric. Hmm unless its padded... but we won't go there just yet.

Fabric comes in different widths. So I would hazard a guess at:

Fabric 60" wide needs 1 1/2 yards
Fabric 54" wide needs 1 3/4 yards
Fabric 36" wide needs 3 yards

So you ask the fabric seller which width the fabric is and he will sell you the appropriate length.

Any help?

No I'm more confused now! Let me see if I can find it.....
Ah ha! Here; www.amybutlerdesign.com/products/patterns_display.php?id=16
I want to make my own as everyone I know has a Huggies free one and I just want something a bit different ;)

I had a look at the link.
Yes there is an outer and an inner stated but they don't show the actual pattern or any clue about the instructions so I cant' see where the canvas comes in unless its sandwiched between outer and inner? There is a lot of yardage there, it would end up an expensive item if you buy decent cotton fabric. Not to mention how much the pattern will cost and those are not cheap.

But then I tend to make things as much for economy as for creative purposes!

And tbh I can't see that design staying on your shoulder when you are lugging baby, pushing pram.

MrsBadger · 22/11/2007 23:08

aha
it appears Amy Butler fabrics are 44" wide

so I'd buy 44"

MrsBadger · 22/11/2007 23:09

and yes, I'd just buy a nice big handbag and sling the changing mat etc in it

Washersaurus · 22/11/2007 23:09

MrsB you are sooo clever (I knew you'd be able to help)

So what is the canvas for? Just to strengthen the bag?

pamplemousse · 22/11/2007 23:10

Thanks for your help on this!

I'd never be able to carry all my nappy related paraphernalia in a shoulder bag anyway (would do myself an injury) - I've got a giant pannier bag on my buggy
