What should I call my sewing business?

Since lockdown, I have been doing quite a bit of sewing, using free motion embroidery to make bags of various sizes/functions, cushion covers, cards etc. Much to my surprise, people have been asking me to make things for them and I am now charging (a little bit!) for my makes. I am getting more requests and from people who aren't friends and wondering if I should up my commercial game a bit. I have an Instagram page but I don't love the name (not sure if I am allowed to put it on here, incase it is advertising!). Any suggestions for names?

Sew-and-sew
A stitch in time
Little Miss Threadneedle
The Nimble Thimble

SpindleWhorl · 02/06/2021 18:09

Do not call it 'a stitch in time' I beseech you.

There are so many small sewing businesses out there now - id be inclined to name it after your name or location to help people remember/find you? Eg Julie’s Sewing, or Nottingham Embroidery. I buy from a lot of small crafters on Etsy and honestly the only names I can remember are the ones who’ve used their actual name, and then any message is in that name as well.

Thank you all for your comments. I agree that it should be more specific. My Instagram page is victorias_sewing, so does what some of you suggested! I struggle with the lack of punctuation!!

Vic’s stitches?

Make sure you charge adequately for your time and materials. Quality fabric isn’t cheap!

I do lots of sewing/crafts too from embroidery (hand & machine) to bag making, accessories, clothes, macrame, book folding etc.

I like wearing my makes but it drives me insane when friends and relatives say stuff like ‘Oo that’s lovely, you could sell that for £xx’ without having the first clue how long the item took me to make because I’m not churning them out like a factory.

If you reply ‘no, I don’t want to work for 50p an hour’, they get all offended because they genuinely believe they were being complimentary. 🤦🏻‍♀️🤣

Clifton Green in York :-)

@Killahangilion charging is very difficult.... I earn a reasonable salary in my day job and so I am still at the surprised stage that people do like my sewing! The hourly rate I'm charging is pitiful (but I don't think I can go higher really!), but arguably it's better than academia (where I currently work!)

Please don’t undercharge! It’s one thing giving away your time for free to people you know as a favour / gift, don’t do it for strangers!

Also try to think longterm - don’t make your name too specific in case you want to branch out in other directions later.

Victoria Thumb (With a thimble symbol?!)

RickJames · 02/06/2021 21:14

My mum used to have a sewing business - she asked me to help her name it and I suggested "Touching cloth" Grin

She replied with a few choice words and named it something with her name in it.

Good luck OP!
