I'm making one atm but got the pattern from a knitting book, but I know John Lewis/House of Fraser do knitting patterns for about £2 - can you get to a store and find a hat pattern there?

I always recommend this one as it turns out nice and flat: top down hat. For circular knitting, this is good: www.knittinghelp.com/ And this site:

Theres a short rows one on knitty , it's in garter stitch but could be done in stocking stitch, the beauty of it is that it's not got many stitches as you knit it sideways . DS2 wanted a hat like an orange last winter and i used the pattern Tychus
