For my dd's project - we want to give impression paper has been in a fire - any ideas as to how to create this..

(or do we simply put paper over the gas ring?)

You could burn the edges and then stain the paper with cold tea then leave it to dry on a radiator.

If you want no eyelashes or brows then yes to gas ring...

OR alternatively, roughly rip the edges of paper to give uneven edges, then 'paint' whole paper with weak coffee and let dry. then touch up edges with much stronger cold coffee to give darkened edge. When dry, do what ever writing or drawing on the paper you need to do. Dd1 did this for a picture recently and it looked really good.
