Dressmaking help please - French Curves

8 replies

Hi all, I'm a long time fiddler with dressmaking (only for myself and DD when she was small, nothing flash!) and I'm now hoping to move forward to altering patterns/designing my own patterns 😊

Having binged YouTube tutorials I want to get a French Curve and Hip Curve, my problem is where to start?! There are single pieces, sets, clear ones, coloured ones, cheap ones, expensive ones...

Could anyone point me in the right direction please? Am I better off buying a single inexpensive FC first and possibly upgrading/adding more pieces later or should I get a more expensive FC or set from the start?

I always remember having been told to choose the sewing machine I wanted and then to go for the "whizzier " model as you outgrow your first choice very quickly 🤣

Any thoughts, tips, supplier suggestions gratefully received, thank you 😊

A very long time ago I used to draft and alter my own patterns. I used a set of French curves which were fine.

Thanks @commontern , which ones did you get? I'm not sure if a cheap set to start with is the way to go?

This was a very long time ago and they were just the standard set of 3 French curves. They are available from art shops but I would check that they are large enough as I think they might vary in size.

Thanks, I'll have a look and see what I can get 👍🏼

I do a lot of my own patterns and have this one.

It is solidly made and has everything I have ever needed on it somewhere.

Hi @TonTonMacoute, sorry but your picture/ link isn't showing ☹️ Please could you try posting it again? Thank you 😊

@TonTonMacoute 's link works okay for me but I am looking at it on a laptop. This should link to the same thing, Economy Pattern Master.

@7catsisnotenough

This link might be better.

I'm sure I got mine at Amazon, but can't remember which exact one.
