Help with christmas fabric bags please

Hello!

I'd like to make some fabric bags to use as wrapping for next year. I guess either just sacks or drawstring style. Can anyone suggest to me a place from which to buy fabric and which types of fabric would be easiest - I had assumed cotton initially but now I'm wondering whether I'm wrong and something else would be better (and I had a sudden wild image of velvet being amazing).

I'd like either plain fabrics in Christmassy colours or Christmas patterned fabric.

Can anyone suggest any sites to look at?

Cheers

Flamingo Fabrics
Handicraft Agnes
Dalston Mill
Wool Warehouse
are all good places with some lovely fabrics.

Cotton or polycotton fabrics are easy to sew.

Empress Mills has some reduced price Christmas polycottons

I make fabric gift bags from old or damaged clothes, and have a huge roll of paracord to make the ties.

Felt is good for making bags for books and CDs as you just sew the hem on the right side. Make the back pice a bit longer with a point and use a small piece of velcro as the fastening - the stick on stuff from Poundland is perfect for this as you only need a small bit so it lasts ages and there are no problems lining it up.

I make up batches at a time. They go round and round in our family or I get them back.

Teatowels are often an excellent, cheap way of getting fabric for drawstring bags, usually thick enough material that you don't need to line them either. You can often find Christmas themed ones. I also use old jeans with Christmas fabric embellishments

It's been years since I've been, but if you live near Bradford, Bombay stores is like a Walmart full of amazing sari fabrics. It's like walking into a rainbow. It's online too, but if you are near, a visit is a real treat!

Teatowels is a good shout, I do have a shameful collection of vintage ones... 50+ easily.

And sari fabric is a lovely idea, I'm not that close to Bradford but I'll have a look online, thank you.
