I've recently started crochet and would to make and sell to top up my maternity money. It's not a great deal is it!

What would be a great name?

It's such a saturated market, would it be better to find an area that is my niche.

Thinking of doing baby/newborn boxes with blanket, hat and mittens.

Fluffy Cloud Creations? It's a name of my fave stitch and goes well.

Thoughts please

I like the Fluffy Clouds name. But, I am going to be doom and gloom about making money from crochet. Cost out all your materials including packaging etc. Then figure how much time you'll be spending including time spent on marketing posting etc. Figure out a reasonable selling price and see what hourly rate you get.

As someone who doesn't crochet I wouldn't have a clue that fluffy cloud was a type of stitch. Smile

On a more depressing note, as well as the over saturated market. The effort you put in really doesn't reflect what people often expect to pay for items like the ones you mentioned. Whilst it's a nice little hobby, unfortunately it really isn't a great way to make money.

Thanks for the feedback!

Yeah exactly. Got to think of your time etc. I just want to make a little extra money from a hobby.
No way you could earn a living from it.

Just thinking baby clothes as cute and smaller haha

What about doing some YouTube videos on how to crochet. There are a few already but a lot of American ones. But I suppose its building up viewers. I dont think there would be much money in selling crochet items. But you could give it a go.

I do crochet and I wouldn't have a clue either!

I genuinely don't think that there is money to be made in crochet though. By the time you've factored in your time, the price would be so high people won't be prepared to pay it. People don't value the time it takes to handcraft something. Especially a blanket, even a baby one!

Tinuviel · 14/12/2020 14:49

I costed a couple of blankets I made for my DSs and it worked out at £300 and I would get less than minimum wage! Lovely hobby; but not profitable!

Yeah you need time don't you. I have a 4 month old. Not exact what I have spare at the minute.

Think I will just do it to make presents for people

It's a shame isn't it? I've just finished a cabled baby hat and it took a good few evenings. No one would be prepared to pay the fair amount for my time.

Keep it simple.

Crochet by ‘your name’ keeps your options open if you branch out from making baby clothes.
