Just how hard is it to make a cushion cover?

I have never made anything but have this urge to make some cushion covers with some fab fabric on sale in Laura Ashley. Is it quite easy? Any suggestions? Would I need a pattern? Are you all laughing at me now for asking such a ridiculous question

(and then I want to make some curtains.......)

Depend what kind you do.
If you add a zip it's harder.
You could do like an envelope style one.

BettyBatShapedSpaghetti · 19/10/2007 18:17

The easiest way (avoiding zips etc) is to overlap the fabric by quite a bit at the back so its open but you can't see the inner cushion pad because of the overlap ...IYSWIM...difficult to explain

ChippyMinton · 19/10/2007 18:17

one with ties similar to the style I usually make.

To do the envelope ones you need (for example)

1 peice of square fabric 10" by 10" and 2 squares 10" by 6-7". That should give you enough overlap

I.e. the rectangles should be about 2/3 the width of the square to create sufficient overlap.

Thank you

Oi Hal, what are you doing on A&C? Do you actually have a sewing machine? I need to make some bits for L so if you need a hand, I will help you (now, I am a bit rubbish on the machine, because I am afraid of it but if you come to my house I can show you the basic principles)

Ginger - your cushions are finished and I'm posting them Monday. If you don't like the fabric I've used then obviously I'll change them

Katymac · 20/10/2007 22:40

Easy way

Start with a peice of fabric about 5 or 6 cms wider than your cushion and 3 times as long as your cushion

Fold the material into three with the wrong side facing inside

Fold the top piece back so that the lower half is 3/4, folded back 1/4 & do the same with the piece underneath

Then sew the open edges up

Actually that doesn't sound easy at all - but it works

hoorah - thanks dizzy! (Actually sarah - there's the easiest way to make a cushion, get dizzy to do it, lol!!!), I may need to send you some fabric to make me a duvet cover and pillow case if my attempts go as badly as I suspect!!!!!

dizzyday07 · 20/10/2007 23:15

Duvets and pillowcases are easy - otherwise I couldn't make them!!

GingermonkeySucksBlood · 20/10/2007 23:23

yes, but they involve the dreaded sewing machine, and my irrational fear of sewing my fingers together - which makes me shake, and my stitches go all wibbly wobbly!!! I am thinking, making a simple pillow case for the beloved baby monkey will cure me (or at least ease the irrational fear a little!)

Sewing machinge Ginger, what's that No but my Mum does so am considering dusting it off to start doing more productive activities with my evenings other than swigging red wine and eating crisps
