what sewing machine do you have?

my sewing machine is crap!, it jammed up on me today and the tension has never been right since i dropped it down the stairs when moving house as a student (kinda tells you how old it is )

i think i want would like a new one, but have been out of the sewing machine market for yonks, the only brand that springs to mind is bernina, but there are loads around these days, what's good, what's not?

am not looking for fancy pre programmable computerised stitches, just basic straight, zig zag, etc but needs to convert to flat bed for free machine embroidery.

does anyone have one of those new embellisher machines with felting needles on it, what are they like (they look fab!)

I have a fab singer which was built in 1959 - I have never sewn on a better machine (not much help sorry)

I can't really help, but my singer died earlier this year, I now have a brother and I hate it with a passion. Just doesn't have the reassuring solidity of the singer.
You need to go to a sewing shop and try them out really to find one that feels right to you. I have to say that I am sorely tempted to look for a second hand singer tho', I really miss mine

I have a fab sewing machine, reliable, good value and meets all my needs.

Here's a link

Take a look at my blog to see what I have made with it - it's not the most expensive but it does have enough features to accommodate most needs.

I love mine can you tell ?

grannyslippers · 17/10/2007 21:33

I have an elna, it's pretty old but I think it's wonderful. I chose to buy it secondhand about 10 years ago due to a mistrust of computerised ones. Nice and heavy, lots of metal.

Specifically it's an elna Carina SU. The older elna's are Swiss made, but it's a good make like Bernina.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 17/10/2007 21:37

mine is a crappy e&r one and the tension is never right.
i need a new one.
i am not doing any sewing atm as i cannot afford a new one and sewing with that old banger makes it stressful rather than theraputic.

screaminghousewife · 17/10/2007 21:43

It's the metal on the singer I miss {wistful}.
The brother one, I 'borrowed' from my mum, has plastic gears, plastic everything, 'tis not the same.

tillyboo, funnily enough, the one i have is a huskystar

but its an old one, about 15 years old, and was the bottom of the range. it got a real battering when i was doing my final year on my degree. at college, they had berninas
