kits to make cuddly toys

When I was about 10, I remember having kits to make cuddly toys. they had pre-cut fur fabric that you would stitch by hand and plastic eyes etc, and the final toy was pretty complex. There were puppies and owls and tigers as well as just bears.

I've been looking to get similar kits for my 10 year old but can't find any good ones. Modern kits all seem to be like 'build a bear' where 90% of the sewing is already done and all you do is stuff it & choose some clothes.

I want a kit that requires plenty of sewing and is a bit more advanced, but can still be done by a careful 10 year old (with some help). And ideally a big choice of possible animals too.

Does this still exist?

Ideas for sewing patterns for soft toys would be good too, but I've still struggled to find a wide selection of animals.

Oooo I remember those! I think I had either a lion or tiger. I never actually finished it though. It was too difficult Grin which is odd as I've never found a craft I can't do as an adult Blush

I haven't seen anything like it for a long time though.

These are patterns rather than kits but there is a great selection (I have lots!) The platypus is a great one to start with. www.funkyfriendsfactory.com/

Thanks all. FunkyFriends looks great.

the ones I've seen in John Lewis & Hobbycraft are all too simple. And similarly, we bought a 'gift in a tin' with hedgehogs and they were 90% already sewn up. Adding stuffing and sewing 1 seam only took 5 mins.

I imagine it could because of CE testing if it’s aimed at a child making it.

"Countryside softies" by Amy Adams has some amazing makes.

I know exactly what you mean.. I used to make these when I was about 10! Here is a little mole I made about 25 years ago! I used to get the kits at local craft shops rather then department stores, would love to know if anyone finds anything similar.

Was it the Dryad craft kits of the 1980s you were thinking of?

Most new patterns now are online/PDFs, I've found lots just by googling and browsing around on Pinterest. This kind of thing angelleadesigns.com/shop/animals/
A little stock of felt, plush and stuffing would get her started.

The ones I remember were in plastic bags hanging on one of those racks that spin round.
