I have rediscovered crocheting and want to make some Toft minis but with different yarn. What would you recommend? It needs to be DK / Aran (at a push) and have a decent colour range. Would you go cotton, cotton mix, acrylic, wool etc?

I find a lot of cotton yarn very splitty which can be awkward with amigurumi. I've successfully used good old Stylecraft Special DK before and that certainly comes in a good range of colours!

I once made a Toft bunny using Drops alpaca and it is so lovely and soft (but completely inappropriate for anything other than ornament!)

Acrylic dk I've used with a 2.5 hook to prevent holes, I normally use paintbox dk or ricorumi

I’ve done a few Toft animals and found that their yarn really does work best. It’s pricey though! I am interested in trying some of these other suggestions.

Thank you everyone. It was the paintbox cotton I was looking at - 50g, £2.50 a ball (no dearer than the ami packs) and I reckon I need 11 / 12 different colours. I agree that Toft yarn is second to none but it’s dear for the amount of colours I’d need! I tend to use KC drifter in dk or Aran so thought I would try something different. I can’t feel it first though hence the recommendation request! Drops is apparently a brilliant sub for Toft - Drops Nepal is very popular I believe.

I prefer cotton for amigurumi. My all time favourite is DMC Petra size 3 but that's not DK weight. Ricorumi is my current go to for DK weight, 100% cotton and great range of colours.

Having said that I'm not sure the toft patterns lend themselves to using a cotton yarn, I think I'd stick with wool/ wool blend.
I'm not a fan of the toft patterns after making a couple, but I used drops puna for those (100% alpaca).

Searching the pattern projects on ravelry is a good way to see what other yarns people have used

I've only ever used Paintbox aran or dk for amigurumi (one of my favourites attached, this was in aran), but that's just 100% acrylic isn't it?

Is cotton better? Acrylic can get a bit holey where you've got multiple decreases...

Paintbox aran comes in acrylic or cotton

Aldi have a cotton amigurumi yarn on their website at the moment. 72 25g balls in 36 colours for something like £27.

I've never used it so can't comment on it but it seemed to have decent reviews.

SoupDragon · 01/11/2020 17:37

(It is £30 and does have some poor reviews but most are 5*)

You can do invisible decreases to prevent holes. Work in the front loop of each stitch you’re decreasing.

The invisible decrease is so simple and really effective.

Thank you, lovelies. I think I’ve persuaded my LYS to stock Drops so I might be going down that route!

I don't make amigurumi, but I find Drops Muskat (DK) and Drops Paris (aran) much less splitty than some other brands.
