Linocut - any experts around?

I just started a linocut for the first time and trying to work out the process. Are you supposed to do the drawing on tracing paper then print it somehow onto the board so you have the print ready for carving? I couldn’t figure out how this would work so I ended up just drawing it on with a pencil directly on to the board. Is there an easier way? If I draw into tracing paper, what do I use so that it will transfer to the board? Any advice gratefully received xx

It all depends on what your original image is. If its from a computer you can transfer the Image.

If its a drawing of yours, redrawing is probably quicker than any other method. You could always draw on tracing paper, turn it upside down and rub with pencil on the back to transfer your lines.

Also when transferring your image don't forget that when you print it will be mirrored. For less able students I mirror photocopy the image they want to put onto their tile then they graphite the back of the photocopy and go over the lines with a biro to copy the image onto the tile.

Forgot to say if you're confident in drawing there's nothing wrong with drawing straight onto the tile, this is usually what I'd do.

Draw/trace the picture you want.

Layer lino, carbon paper (shiny side down), picture

Retrace picture. The carbon paper should transfer your image. Lift and check. Start cutting

You can get carbon paper in all sorts of colours, I use it a lot for my sewing.
