Cross-stitchers - a question....

Do you see from left to right?
Top to bottom?
Or something else....
I'm left-handed and sew from left to right, but bottom to top.
I've been wondering for a while if other people do it differently to me, and why? Smile

I start in the middle! i'm always paranoid that what ever i'm sewing won't fit, so my theory is if i start in the middle i can adjust the pattern (depending on what it is) that way! If i'm designing my own piece i plot it on graph paper first, but will still always start in the middle.

I'm a middle starter too....again its because im paranoid that I wont have enough fabric

Sorry, I should have been clearer....
I meant when you are working a block of colour and you know it will fit.
I was curious because it occurred to me that maybe I do it differently to right-handlers.

In that situation it would be left to right, top to bottom, as if i was reading a book (if that makes sense)

mineofuselessinformation · 24/09/2020 20:38

@DaisyChainsForever are you right or left handed?

I'd go left to right, bottom to top. I'm right-handed.

DaisyChainsForever · 24/09/2020 20:56

i'm right handed

mineofuselessinformation · 24/09/2020 21:35

Oooh! Interesting.
I thought the bottom to top thing might be because I'm left handed....
Maybe I'm wrong. Smile

If I’m doing a block of colour I try to start somewhere where it’s touching or close to a bit I’ve already done (so I don’t have to count a lot of squares, which is when I make mistakes!).

So I could be starting a block from the bottom or the top. If I work downwards, I do the first half of the stitches working left to right. If I’m working from bottom to top I go from right to left first. I prefer this as it means in general I’m bringing the needle up through an empty hole and down through a hole that’s already got a stitch in - I find it keeps it neater that way, as if you come up through a hole with a lot of threads in already it can pull the stitches up a bit and make it less neat.

I am right-handed.
