DD's birthday is coming up and she's expressed an interest in getting a sewing machine. She's dabbled with various little projects in the past and a sewing machine would be a good gift, I think.

I don't want to get her a little novelty machine - I want her to think that I'm taking her seriously, but neither do I want to spend £££'s on it.

What would be a good one to start off with?

Thanks.

John Lewis do their own basic machines which also come in a range of colours (I have the white one which is slightly cheaper but have used it to make clothes and curtains.) I believe they are made my Janome or another well known brand but branded as John Lewis own. Would be perfect for your DD.

Yes, the John Lewis branded Janome one - I got a purple one for my child when she was 9. Think the do two sizes. A half model and a full size one - get the full size one. It's a lovely machine. Check that your local sewing machine repair shop will do the make you get.

Lidl have a Singer sewing machine at the moment for £99. It looks to be a basic beginners machine and Singer are a reputable make.

My last 2 machines have a variable speed setting - great for teaching my dc to sew as they can't go too fast. Good idea for a beginners machine.

Mine were mid range brother and Janome.
