Anyone dye their own yarn?

I mean dyeing purchased yarn (not like the whole carding and spinning process) - does it work with acrylics? Please tell me everything.

I've done it with wool and a cheap tie dye kit from Aldi. It worked really well.

I don't think you can dye acrylic yarn though, no.

That sounds promising! Did you unwind it all first? I’ve left some acrylic yarn in a tub of violently fuchsia fibre reactive dye to see what happens, I hope it will sort of ombré itself and fade to white in the middle.

Yes, I wound it from balls into long skeins loosely tied with yarn.

I used the tie dye kits as they were a really cheap way to try out dyeing yarn. I used Drops merino based yarns in white/cream as they are also fairly cheap.

Oh I love Drops so much, I’ve got some big merino somewhere but it’s already a beautiful colour.

Can confirm that procion mx dye pretty much washes straight out of acrylic yarn, it is a nice washed out look though 🤔

I will have to get all my stuff out again. It's definitely a summer project as it's easier to dry the yarn by hanging it outside!
