Will a basic machine be good enough and will I need a walking foot?

Total sewing novice here. Always wanted to give it a try.

So I'm treating myself to a sewing machine and will be trying to make a few things like a handbag with vinyl/faux leather material. I've actually already got some cheap material for a first try, it's very thin stuff.

Will a domestic sewing machine be able to sew faux leather? And I'm looking at machines, do I need a sewing machine with a walking foot?

John Lewis has this guide: www.johnlewis.com/buying-guides/sewing-machines-buying-guide?suggestion=true%3a%3asewing+machi#_search_suggestion_referral I have never worked with faux leather, my understanding is you should buy the best machine you can afford. I have a janome and love it, but tbh my old brother was pretty great too.

You will need to get a special needle but not sure about the walking foot. I’ve not tried leather or faux leather but have read that it can help to sew with a tissue paper strip which you can tear off after.
