Confession time - I'm not a bad knitter, but my casting on is monumentally crap!! Help please ...

I cast on using two needles - I have to say I've never mastered casting on using one needle but maybe I didn't try hard enough . But when I knit my first row I end up with a load of uneven loops along the bottom. To get round this I tend to knit into the back of each stitch on the first row but that does make the bottom rather tight and reduces elasticity which, I have just discovered to my cost, totally knackers your knitted hats!!!

Helllllp ... what am I doing wrong?

I'm the same but have been better since using the cable cast on method as shown here (scroll down a bit on the link)
