Need some advice: Shells

Hiya,
I've got a load of shells from my holiday, and would love to make some pendents with them.

But, what is the best way to put the hole into the shell, without the shell cracking?

With difficulty. I did it a few years ago and the only way I could find was to work at it slowly with a needle. Took forever! Drills just broke them.

The main points seem to be to take it very slowly, and have something directly underneath the bit of the shell you want the hole in to help cushion it.
