Sew for the NHS appeal

This was sent to me by a consultant in Birmingham, so I think it is, terrifyingly, legitimate. NHS staff need clean scrubs between contagious patients, obviously, but they can't clean them fast enough, given the limited numbers they have. This crisis is so awful, the most basic things, such as scrubs, are in limited supply. If you can sew, the NHS needs you right now.

I can't, but I figured I knew a place that could.

This is the pattern: drive.google.com/drive/folders/1U24En45BeM0xGacJ3Sa4IVFgzJbNbM12 - materials are specified.

And they list hospitals in need of the scrubs on the Facebook page.

I hope it's okay to post, here. I'm a very lucky recipient of a Woolly Hugs Candy Hug, so I know how kind and generous the MNer craft community can be.

I can't sew but "bump".

Bump. Can't sew

perfectstorm · 29/03/2020 23:03

Thank you so much for the bumps.

Wish I could sew - any attempt by me would just waste needed material, sadly.

I can see but haven't got suitable fabric, would have to be pure cotton I guess to was at high temps. Any companies donating fabric?

ginghamstarfish · 29/03/2020 23:13

I can SEW not see!

perfectstorm · 30/03/2020 03:20

@ginghamstarfish they are sending packs, with fabric, out to people willing to sew but without the materials. I think its a polycotton from memory but as I don't sew, I didn't pay that much attention - if you join that Facebook group they are recruiting people by area.

They're checking carefully - someone from my area said our local hospital want some, and a mod jumped in at once and said okay we need the email to evidence that, because the last thing hospitals need are managing random individual donations (and once it was checked, the person to post first for an area is asked to co-ordinate, I think? Seems quite organised).

If you run a search for your local NHS Trust, county, or town, in that Facebook group then they will be able to help you on how to get a pack.

Thank you so much for this. It's awful that medics are so poorly equipped - two have just died. Wish I could sew.

Oh, and looking at the posts, a fabric shop local to us is selling the fabric at cost to anyone using it for this purpose.

And they have now created files telling people how to get their completed scrubs to their local hospital - who is the contact there to receive them. Several free patterns available, too - it's all on the 'files' section of the Facebook page.

Bumping for you - I've just stumbled across this thread and it's really got to me. The hospital where my amazing sister works is accepting scrubs, and it broke my heart that she's been plunged into this horrendous situation without adequate protection. Thank you to anyone who signs up for this - I wish I could too, but my sewing skils are ropey at best, even when not trying to juggle a full time job from the dining table and two small children at home as well. Thank you Flowers

I'm making washbags from my old linen stash. I haven't had any demand for button hairbands though. I've done 2 already.
