What can I protect painted boards with?

Hi there. I am making some false 'shutters' for a children's wooden playhouse and am painting quite an intricate horse on them. I don't really want them to look wrecked after a year or two. Any suggestions as to what I could protect them with. Have thought of varnish, but didn't know if it would yellow or crack. Any ideas?

would think a clear vvarnish would be fine.

A clear varnish - a couple of coats should do it. I handpaint children's furniture and i've had no problems with cracking etc. B&Q clear.
