upcycling scarves into tops?

Have had an idea and not sure it would work.....

I volunteer in a charity shop and we have a LOT of scarves. Large summer lightweight scarves, the ones which are about 4 feet long by 2 feet wide.

I was thinking that I could make floaty summer tops out of them. Fold the scarves in half and cut. Use the hemmed edges as the neck edge to make a slash neck. sew from the top corners into the centre neck opening to make shoulders/sleeves. Hem cut bottom edges to right length, stitch up side seams. Et voila?

So in effect, two squares of fabric sewn together. Would it work or just look like a sack of spuds?

I also have a LOVELY vintage rayon 1970s scarf which is about 15 inches by 15 inches which would look lovely made into a top, but one thing at a time!!

found a pic. this sort of thing. Although with a slash neck for simplicity...

Pinterest how to page. Lots of ideas for doing this without cutting or sewing.

Hermes (the luxury brand not the unluxurious courier) used to have a booklet full of these ideas.

But I daresay your upcycled scarves-as-tops might appeal to a wider ranger of shoppers.

I'm not selling them!! The idea is to rescue some of the scarves which we can't sell in the store and would usually go for rags and make them into something wearable for my summer holiday.

Unfortunately we don't see much Hermes. Mostly Accessorize and M&S....

But why not sell them through the shop to attract more custom?

They won't be good enough for selling! Plus I don't really want to get into feeling I have to do it, or it become an obligation.
