Knitting a star - I give up, please help!

I haven't knitted in ages and am having to re learn it all. I'm doing a granny square blanket and one square has a 5 pointed star. 45 stitches across, row 1 has the first points of the star, so 2 single stitches in contrast colour, 17 stitches apart. Next row - 2 x 2 stitches in contrast colour. 10 rows before legs of the star are united.
Do I go straight into intarsia or can I fudge some fair isle for a couple of rows - I've tried a couple of rows of each and they look equally rubbish. If I stick w intarsia will it look better when I've done more and can pull it together a bit? Would appreciate input of experiences knitter.
