HELP!!! Crotcheting and doing turning chains!!

I just can't get hang of it!! How do you do turning chains????? My work just ends up back to front and shapeless heap!

Right you do your row and then you make the appropriate number of chains for your stitch, so if you're doing double crochet (the UK one) you do 1 chain, half treble, 2 and treble is 3 and then turn the work so that the reverse side faces you.
You make a chain exactly the same way that you do the foundation chains, yrh, pull through loop.

Forgot to say once you've turned the work just put your hook in the stitch that you need to work your next stitch in.

And then you would continue crotcheting into the work with the 'wrong' side facing you or should it end up with the 'right' side facing you?

When you begin crocheting you will have the wrong side in your left hand and as you crochet it moves towards the right, iyswim. Give me a moment I'll post something you might find useful, gotta find it first.

If you have adobe, there is a crochet guide on this page here that you can print off but, I have to confess that I got my mum to show me in the end (she's an enthusiastic crocheter) after which it all came clear.

I will...I'm left handed though....but hold the hook in my right hand so I guess I crotchet as if was right handed.....I hold the foundation chain in my left hand and work from right to left for the first row though...is that what you do?

Yes, I hold the hook in my right hand and foundation chain in my left.

Oh good! How funny that I'm so left handed with many things, but not crotchet.....
