usually I paint on paper with high pigment aquarell colours (but I use them for block colours, no blending in).

if I want to scale up onto canvas what would be the best high pigment colour? poster paints?

Acrylics

Sorry posted too soon! Poster paints don’t have a high pigment count, it’s a lot of filler, that’s why they’re a good starter paint n schools. For areas of flat, block colour, acrylics are a good bet (particularly if you’re not used to oil paints).

what to do about the sides?
paint with the motif or in a complementary colour?
(will not get a frame for now)

I would say acrylics too - they dry much, much quicker than oils, so it is easier to paint over mistakes (which is useful when you make as many as I do).

I have seen both options, when it comes to the edges - I’d probably try to carry on the motif/design, and paint over it with a darker colour if I didn’t like how it looked.

thank you.
I'm very excited about starting it now!
