Recycling Old Knitting Help

Hello all,

I’m looking for advice if possible. My lovely grandma has very recently passed away.

She was a prolific knitter and made quite a number of dolls outfits which are beaded and ribboned.

I really want to save them and turn them into something we can all keep.

Do you think it is possible to turn them into Christmas decorations? I’ve seen some on Pinterest where knitting is wrapped around a bauble. Would an experienced knitter be able to do it?

We had my Mum’s jumpers made into cushion covers, by a local crafts person who had a business & made clothes etc out of recycled knitwear. Unfortunately, she has just stopped trading, otherwise I would have passed on her details.

We all have cushions made from her jumpers & they are something I treasure.

Thanks @Northumberlandlass there’s a lovely lady who sells wool on a local market stall who has knitted goods. I think I’ll go and see her. Glad she won’t laugh at me

Can you post a picture from Pinterest to show what effect you are looking for?

The most difficult bit (imo) would be if anything needed to be made significantly smaller.

Hi @TheWoollybacksWife. This is the kind of dolls clothes I mean - there are about 7 or 8 of them with different colours/stitches and some have pearls or sequins attached

I'm not sure about turning the cardigans or dresses into Christmas decorations but they could be made into different small decorative items - maybe square them off, tuck the sleeves in and stitch across the armholes. You could fill with a lavender sachet and tuck them in your sheets/towels or your knicker drawer. A little old fashioned but lovely.

Hats could be wrapped around baubles and any excess gathered at the top and wrapped with a matching ribbon. Hobbycraft sell polystyrene baubles and as long as you don't cut or glue anything until you are sure of what you are doing then you can practice until you are happy. You could turn bootees/mitts into a garland by stitching them to a length of ribbon or add a ribbon loop to make tree decorations.

I think that if you're OK with a needle this should be relatively straightforward. Yes either use polystyrene baubles or probably better get some old baubles you're fed up with and use those instead.

@OtraCosaMariposa Thank you, I’ve enlisted the help of a crafty friend who thinks we should be able to wrap some old white plastic baubles in the way you’ve described.

I’m thinking about adding matching ribbons and mini pom poms. I’ve got my last birthday card from her so I should be able to get her handwriting duplicated and added as a little tag “love from grandma” my cousins will love them.
If they are a success I will share Wine
