Sewing an initial onto a tapestry - advice needed please

It’s a really simple tapestry but I’ve not sewn an initial on before. Do I cut the letter out and pin it to canvas and sew through it? It’s for a gift and I want it to look as perfect as possible. Thanks.

It looks like you line up the green squares at the top and bottom of the initial with the green squares printed on the teddy's jersey.

So using the letter D as an example - stitch the jersey working the stripes in red and white then work the central stitch of the top row of the D in your contrast colour directly underneath the place where the top green square is on the stripes on the pattern. Then work two stitches each side of the first stitch you made.

Work the next row working downwards using the pattern for your chosen letter as a guide. If you've done it correctly the middle stitch of the bottom row of the D (in my example) will be directly above the lower green square on the jersey.

You don't work the sticky out squares on each letter - they just correspond with the green squares in the jersey and are for positioning purposes only.

I hope that explains it clearly.

Aha thank you so much for a very clear explanation. I was all for cutting out the actual letter and trying to pin it on canvas 😊.
